IMPORTANT FFL INFO
The FFL Process
What is an FFL?
An FFL (Federal Firearms License) gun broker is a person or business that has a Federal Firearms License from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in the United States. The FFL license allows us to be in the business of selling firearms. As an FFL, we are authorized to manage the legal transfer of firearms to you as the buyer, making sure we are both in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
What to look for in an FFL broker?
When making a deal with a gun broker, it’s critical to prioritize safety, legality, and responsible ownership. At Deschutes Firearm Training (FFL Type #7 with the SOT2), you can always expect any broker appointment to be met with professionalism and safety. This license allows for the sale and manufacture of NFA items such as suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and short barreled shotguns.
What does the process look like to buy a firearm?
- Try Before you Shoot: At Deschutes Firearm Training, we also offer pistols to try out at no cost so you can see what each make and model feels like before making a purchase. We have a wide range of .22 LR, 9mm, and .380 auto pistols available.
- Check Local Laws: Before we can move forward, it’s best if you familiarize yourself with local and state firearm laws. Regulations can vary, and it’s essential to know the specific requirements for background checks, waiting periods, and documentation in your area. Currently we only sell firearms to local Oregon residents only. For age restrictions, you must be 21 to purchase a pistol and 18 to buy a rifle or shotgun. We can help answer any questions about regulations.
- Identification and Eligibility: Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license. We will verify your identity and eligibility to buy a firearm. This may include checking your age, citizenship, and any relevant legal restrictions.
- Background Check: All FFL dealers must conduct a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This check ensures that you are eligible to own a firearm and haven’t been convicted of any major offenses. The process usually takes a few minutes.
- Completion of Form 4473: Fill out ATF Form 4473, also known as the Firearms Transaction Record. This form includes personal information, details about the firearm, and questions related to your eligibility. We review the form with you to ensure accuracy.
- Wait Period (varies): For average waiting times, the process usually takes a few days now. The timeframe depends on how many people are in the queue for background checks. We don’t observe the 3-day background check delay rule.
- Approval and Transaction: Once the background check is complete, and you have met all legal requirements, we’ll finalize the documentation and proof of purchase. We’ll process your payment, and you will receive an itemized receipt and the firearm. We accept cash, check, credit, debit, and Venmo as forms of payment.
- Secure Transportation: Because of our location, your firearm has to leave the premise in a locked case with the firearm unloaded. If you are interested in learning more about what the concealed carry options are or want further training, we do offer CCW courses that result in you receiving your CHL permit.
- Record Keeping: We’re required to keep records of the transaction and we keep them indefinitely. We also recommend you keep a copy of the receipt and any relevant documentation for your records.
